Face it, guys: You can work out your abs and biceps like a beast — but if you’re a mess from the neck up, that’s what people are going to notice.
Investing in a good face wash and establishing a regular face-washing routine can keep you looking healthy. And (if you’re wearing a face mask for COVID-19 prevention) it can also help you avoid an outbreak of “maskne.”

“Stress, maskne, extra blue light exposure from nonstop Zoom meetings — it’s all taking a toll on our skin,” says Iva Teixeira, co-founder and CEO of The Good Face Project.
You know that old saying about having thick skin? It’s literally true: men have thicker skin than women, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).
But the skin on your face is thinner than that on other parts of your body, no matter your gender. Therefore, it takes a lot more time and attention to maintain a healthy-looking face.
Skin type varies from person to person. Your face may have skin that’s dry, oily, sensitive, or a combination of all, so choosing the right kind of face wash is important.
“If you are sensitive, stick to micellar water,” New York-based dermatologist Joshua Zeichner says. “If you have dry skin, use a hydrating cleanser. If you have oily skin look for a foaming wash. If you are acne-prone, choose a cleanser that contains salicylic acid.”
The AAD also recommends a moisturizing face wash if you’re prone to razor bumps, razor burns, or ingrown hairs.
If you have acne- (or maskne) prone skin, look for face cleansers labeled “oil-free” or “non-comedogenic” — these won’t clog your pores, dermatologists say.
Some anti-acne products also contain exfoliants like charcoal to help remove dirt and oil from the pores of the skin.
“Men tend to be more prone to blackheads and ingrown hairs, so a cleanser that exfoliates is key to use several times a week to keep them in check,” says celebrity makeup artist Suzy Gerstein.
Not to get cheeky, but soap isn’t dope. It may clean your face, but it also robs it of its moisture.
“True soaps have an alkaline pH and can disrupt the other skin layer,” said Zeichner. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman, the outer skin layer functions best at a pH of around 5.5. Gentle skin cleansers are different from true soaps and cleanse the skin using a more pH-balanced surfactant system.”
Fragrance warning
As great as it might be to carry a whiff of Axe or Old Spice with you, beware of face wash that contains fragrances. If you have sensitive skin, they can irritate or dry your skin out. Even some face washes labeled “unscented” may contain masking fragrances, so switch products if your skin starts to get irritated.
Face wash comes in a variety of forms including gels, creams, and foams.
“If you have oily skin, you’re probably better off with gel cleansers, but if you have dry and sensitive skin, a creamy hydrating cleanser will be a better option,” dermatologist Peterson Pierre of Thousand Oaks, California, based Pierre Skin Care, told Greatist.
Finally, don’t let anyone tell you you’re being lazy if you don’t wash your face every morning. Too much face washing actually can rob your skin of its natural oils.
It’s better to just wash off any accumulated dirt nightly, which also helps to stretch your budget by making your bottle of face wash last longer.
We chose our top face wash products for men based on some skin-tight criteria, including:
Ingredients. Real ingredients that deliver on the promises made on the outside of the bottle.
Online reviews. Preference went to products that were widely reviewed by consumers and skin care experts and got positive ratings.
Availability and affordability. Even the greatest face wash product won’t help you if you can’t get your hands on it, so we sought out options that are easily available and easy on your wallet.
